andrews air force base, over on the beltway close to pennsylvania avenue. let me take you to virginia. 395 traffic not found on the 14th street bridge, that crashed on the d.c. side of the bridge is a doozy. there's a lot of equipment on the scene with only one lane getting by. if you take mass-transit, i have no major disruptions. they are on normal service. >> it is 6:00. in our top story, the growing death toll in the wake of the strong storms that tore across the nation's south. authorities say at least 12 people are dead after high wind from a tornado leveled hundreds of palms. the same storm system is responsible for the severe weather here. courtney robinson is in the newsroom with more on that. good morning. >> what we did see was heavy rain and wind. in comparison, it is not much to what the south and midwest experienced since thursday, more than 80 twisters spotted. more than twice the number in all of march. 10 people are dead, including a baby and two children, killed by tornadoes in mississippi. if the twister left roughly to london mile-long track of destruction in the state.

in the panhandle of west virginia up into pennsylvania, some scattered showers across west virginia and into the ohio valley. that area of low pressure is going to be coming down our way later on today, and before that we may see a little sun this morning. but overall, a cloudy day, some showers by midday and then perhaps some afternoon thunderstorms, some of which may be severe. could produce some hail and damaging winds. that would be from about 3:00 orr 4:00 in the afternoon all the way through perhaps early evening this evening. highs reaching near 70 before then. things should settle down by late this evening and by dawn tomorrow maybe lingering light showers. after that we ought to get sunshine back by tomorrow afternoon with highs in the mid 60s. then the weather does settle down considerably midweek. we veal the shine back on wednesday. should be partly cloudy. morning lows near 40. afternoon highs into the mid 60s. then lots of sunshine for thursday with highs near 70. let's check traffic on this monday morning. jerry, how is it look sng. >> good morning to you. good mornin

in a moment -- 35 reports of hail, in maryland, virginia and west virginia. most of that occurred between 5:00 and 8:00 last night. more rain likely today and this is the problem, we take to you jessup, patuxent valley middle school, 50. storm total yesterday 2.6 inches of rain. when you get that much in a short period of time, it's very hard for it to drain. this is the issue this morning. heavy rain coming down. it's reaching reisterstown, owings mills look out, 795 and 140, reisterstown road, you're getting very wet heavy rain approaching cockeysville. that will be the 83 split through towson. looks like timonium will be very wet. eldersburg, mount airy is getting it now. north side of ellicott city and most of the stuff probably going to pass to the north of ellicott city and columbia, but we have rain and that continues to push to the east which includes our friends in harford county, bel air, on the north side now but looks like more heading from the band in owings mills, in your direction this morning. 50s this morning. we get to 66 and isolated thunderstorms this afternoon. could be

bureau alexandria lee says front royal, virginia, was hit with hail and lightning. it also caused downed trees and power lines. and this morning fema crews are in mississippi, the state was hit hard by these storms. 10 of the 12 fatalities happened in yazoo city according to the national weather service, that area was struck by a tornado that was a mile and a half wide with winds of at least 160 miles an hour. new video out this morning shows just how massive that tornado was. the high winds brought down trees and toppled buildings and homes. nearly 700 homes were damaged or destroyed, most in yazoo city. >> a lot of noise and debris. you could hear stuff coming off the roof. you could hear the front glass window breaking. it seemed like it lasted a long time. and then it was over. >> the inspection today by fema officials is the first step toward a possible presidential disaster declaration. >>> people in northern south carolina are also cleaning up a a possible tornado touched down there. people were injured and homes and buildings were damages in darling ton. the national weather serv

this. it is adding to the congestion we will see all morning long. moving to 495 in virginia. 95 to 66 a different story. pretty much smooth sailing. everybody is moving at speed on i-66, the eastbound trip it is slow between 50 and nutley. happy to report no incidents or accidents at this time. on the outer loop in maryland, we take it north of the district from university to georgia dropping speeds a bit. and 95 southbound this is something new to tell you about it appears we have an accident near the park and ride and that's the only incident on 95. nothing to report on the bw parkway. over to you. >>> a consequence of our bad weather, power outages. at last check 1600 power customers in washington and frederick counties, maryland are without power all because of those storms which moved through last night. our cameras caught the downpour in frederick, maryland. up to three inches fell in that part of the region. some people reported hail. fortunately no reports of any major damage this morning. >>> the cleanup continues this morning in mississippi. a string of tornadoes ravaged the

, but you can see we have some unsettled weather coming out of west virginia. a somewhat complicated low pressure center, which means basically on and off showers, maybe a few thunderstorms. we're not expecting severe thunderstorms. but still, maybe a heavy downpour. cooler and quiet whether as a go through the end of april. -- cool and quiet weather as we go through the end of april. >> across the south, at least 12 are known dead. we have the latest now on the region trying to recover. >> and many in gaza city, mississippi had just seconds -- in yazou city mississippi, many have just seconds to find cover. as this man hit behind the pulpit in his church, it crashed down around him. a system moving through the south and midwest toward their own buildings, uprooted trees -- tore down buildings, uprooted trees. this was once a small grocery, now rubble, inside or six people, including robin sullivan -- inside were six people, including ron sullivan. he and his group survived, but the violent storm claimed the lives of 10 in mississippi, including a baby and two children. two more died in

the chatham bridge. pat? >> in fredericksburg, virginia, population 22,000. there are 72 police officers here. they're not accustomed to a lot of violence. certainly nothing like what happened here last weekend. >> the victim, a 52-year-old. they said he was picked up a few times for drunken disorderly conduct, but he never stole anything. in fact, he was more likely to be a victim of crime than a perpetrator. he was seen wandering ability this intersection in the historic part of fredericksburg. not too far from that chatham bridge. he had taken off the blanket he was sleeping under, stripped away the jacket he had on. some cars drove by. but rick rice stopped. he said someone had taken his money and someone had set him on fire. >> he had burns, and it looked like bruising. but it was actually second degree burns. a lot of his skin had blistered off and was hanging from his body. he didn't have his shirt on. the shirt was gone. i could see the whole side of his body. he couldn't move his arm. it was hanging by his side. >> fredericksburg police down under that bridge today, looking for evide

for help to find a man who may be a witness in the shooting death of a college student from virginia at his school in texas. 18-year-old jaoshua mccackle wa killed. police say a man named curry mccullum was at that party. police believe he's back in this area and drives a blue-green dodge magnum with maryland plates. >>> a northern virginia community is still reeling from the tragic loss of a father who died after a freak accident during a softball game. george crist was 55 years old. loudoun county fire officials say he was pitching in a softball game at the potomac lakes sportsplex when a softball hit him in the neck on a line drive. the ball apparently ruptured an artery in his neck. he died several hours later at the hospital. his pastor and family members remembered him as a phatter who dedicated his life to giving back to others. more on that story tonight on news 4 at 5:00. >>> police at george mason university are investigating allegations of a sex assault inside a dormitory. investigators tell us a female student reported that a man she knew assaulted her inside maldson dorm early
